Q1. Why does FireFox display this warning?

Snip of FireFox SSL warning A1. I am NOT selling anything and I don't want your Credit Card details. But this site is involved with real passwords so, for security reasons it must use SSL and most browsers have a built in list of Certification Authorities who pay Mega $$'s for that privilege - but I can't. Refer to Q3.
    • Select "I understand the risks"
    • Then click "Add Exception" button.
    • Then click "View" button. This will verify that vnetcafe.com is who it says it is!
    • Select "Permanently store this exception" tick box.
    • Then click "Confirm Security Exception" button.
You will now be able to access the secure content on this web site.

Snip of FireFox SSL warning A2. I am NOT selling anything and I don't want your Credit Card details. • Have a look at the details to ensure you are happy.
    • Then click "Install Certificate" button.
    • Click "Next" to start the installation of the certificate (it's not an executable).

Q3. What's with SSL, CA, Certificates, Public keys and web browsers?

Free SSL Secured By StartCom A3. Click on the StartCom link or go HERE to view wikipedia's definition. Alternatively you may read my (probably incorrect) definition below.

    • To use SSL between any two network points, you must have Public digital Certificate. This is usually provided by the "server" to the "client" - it will allow the client to encrypt data so that only the server can read it (this uses asymmetric keys and is usually slow).
    • SLL is series of transactions between the server and the client, where they eventually negotiate a Private key (symmetric key - usually faster) which is used to encrypt their future messages.
    • You can make your own Public Digital certificate (publlic key) or purchase one from a known Certification Authority (CA). In anycase the CA's information is embedded in the certificate and you normally have to pay handsomely for this.
    • All standard web browsers have their own list of CA's that they accept without question.
    • Web browsers throw up the kind of messages shown in Q1 and Q2 when they are asked by a server to accept a Public digital certificate that was not signed (issued) by any of the CA's in their list.
    • These messages don't mean that the web site is illegitimate - it just means that the Public certificate used by the site was not "signed" or issued by one of their well known CA's.
